Assistant Principals

Assistant Principal vacancies are generally posted at the beginning and middle of each month and remain open for at least 15 calendar days. Posting dates may be adjusted for holidays or weekends. Applications must be submitted online.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. New York State Administrative License
    1. School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) - historical license
    2. School District Administrator (SDA) - historical license
    3. School Building Leader (SBL)
  2. Five or more years of pedagogical experience as outlined in Chancellor’s Regulation C-30
  3. Must meet the following educational, managerial, and administrative qualifications as outlined and aligned to the Chancellor’s Regulation C-30 for educational leaders in New York City:
    1. Instructional Leadership
    2. School Culture
    3. Structures for School Improvement

Application Process

Chancellor’s Regulation C-30 governs the selection, assignment, and appointment of all assistant principals. It is intended to ensure that the supervisory selection process meets the requirements set by New York State law, is equitable, and is based on principles of merit and readiness. The C-30 process is conducted whenever there is an assistant principal vacancy at a school. The Hiring Manager (principal for assistant principal vacancies) is responsible for ensuring that the C-30 process is completed correctly, fairly, and on time.

Online Application – Teacher Support Network (TSN)

If you have previously used TSN to apply for a supervisory title (including the Principal Candidate Pool or the LEAP program)

  • Log into TSN using your existing user name and password.
  • Use your existing profile to apply for specific vacancies. Submit a separate application for each vacancy you wish to apply for.

If you have never used TSN to apply for a supervisory title

  1. Access the TSN online application system.
  2. Click the "Register Now" button on the school leader login page.
  3. If you have previously used TSN to apply for a non-supervisory position (e.g. teacher, pupil personnel titles, lead teacher, master teacher, or substitute teacher), register using the same information, including the email address and password, that you use for your existing non-supervisory application.
  4. Create a School Leader/Supervisory Candidate Profile.
  5. The profile should take you 30-40 minutes to complete.
  6. You may edit your profile information at any time. The updates will be populated to all applications you have submitted.
  7. While you are completing the School Leader/Supervisory Candidate Profile, you may see the following error message: The following errors occurred: Date Available for Employment is earlier than today. If this error occurs, you must change the “Date Available for Employment” in your non-supervisory application to a date in the future (try next week, just to be sure). If you are unable to edit the content of your application, contact TSN's Technical Support team for assistance. They are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and can be reached at 1-877-DO-TEACH (368-3224).
  8. Use the School Leader/Supervisory Candidate Profile you have created for all applications you submit in TSN. Submit a separate application for each vacancy you wish to apply for.

Level I Committee Interview

The Hiring Manager (principal for assistant principal vacancies) reviews the applications submitted and identifies three to five candidates for evaluation by the Level I Committee. The Hiring Manager forms the Level I Committee which includes: one supervisor, two UFT members, one school support staff member represented by DC 37, Local 372, four to seven parents, one to two students (high schools only), one superintendent designee, one designee of intermediary organization, and the principal (chairperson). The Level I Committee interviews the candidates submitted by the Hiring Manager.

Level II Interview

The Hiring Manager (principal for assistant principal vacancies) considers the ratings, evaluations, and recommendations submitted by the Level I Committee In addition, the Hiring Manager may interview the candidates and/or utilize other professional evaluation techniques other than written tests.
